Les sols de la commune de Margaux sont fait pour recevoir de la vigne et la faire fructifier. Une couche de grave épaisse de deux à dix mètres, légérement inclinée vers la Gironde, repose sur un socle calcaire ou arilo-marneux formé à l'ère tertaire. Parfois, il s'y mêle des fragments d'alios ferrugineux. Suite à des études historiques et géologiques, les parcelles de Malescot St-Exupéry ont été identifiées comme étant des noyaux incontournables de la culture de la vigne et ce depuis plus de trois siècles, car elles répondent à des critères de drainage naturel de qualité.
