Area under vine at the estate, from its technical sheet — it does not change from one vintage to the next. Each vintage’s blend, by contrast, departs from it: that figures on its own page.
Château Pavie Macquin is named after the grandfather of the current owners: Albert Macquin (1852-1911), who Saint-Emilion has to thank for the use of grafted plants designed to save the vineyards devastated by phylloxera. In 1994, Nicolas Thienpont was appointed Manager and Winemaker. Recently, his son Cyrille has begun to play an active role.
The 2025 vintage invites us on a journey: here, all is order and beauty, luxury, calm and delight.
Terroir
The terroir is a plateau, next to the Mondot hill and along the edge of the Fongaban fault. The vineyard has a dominant elevation, ranging from 100 metres at the edge of the hill to seventy-five metres at the rim of the plateau. The soils, all clay-limestone, express different notions of terroir in the vineyard depending on their geographical position, the nature of the clays (stronger or less strong), but also and above all on the proximity of the asteriated limestone bedrock, found between 20 cm and 1.5 m deep. The shallow depth of the soils over a large part of Pavie Macquin allows it to express mineral character.
