Château de Ferrand

Vineyard blend
  • 73 % Merlot
  • 27 % Cabernet Franc

Area under vine at the estate, from its technical sheet — it does not change from one vintage to the next. Each vintage’s blend, by contrast, departs from it: that figures on its own page.

The wine

2018 remains a year of great contrasts: very demanding and technical at the start of the cycle, more flexible in the second half. The limestone-clay terroir of Château de Ferrand gave a unique ripeness and a rarely achieved balance between pH, alcohol and anthocyanins. The vintage ranks alongside great years such as 2010 and 2016. The harvest was homogeneous and spared from any trace of disease in spring; it makes up the whole of the grand vin, with no Différent, the second wine. Hand harvest: Merlot from 24 September to 3 October, Cabernet franc on 9 and 10 October.

Terroir

Limestone-clay terroir: in summer it slowly releases the moisture held in the limestone subsoil, giving the vines a water stress that favours ripening.
