Château Haut-Batailley, symbolised by the Tour l’Aspic, marks the entrance to the Pauillac vineyard. The estate takes its name from the place called Batailley, where a battle of the Hundred Years’ War was fought in the 15th century. In 2017 the Cazes family, owners of Château Lynch-Bages and Château Ormes de Pez, acquired the property and began writing a new chapter… At that time the vineyard extended over some forty hectares on soils of deep Garonne gravels, of which only 22 hectares were in production. The following year, after an in-depth study of the terroirs, 19 hectares classified as AOC Pauillac were planted on soils that had been left to rest for many years. Château Haut-Batailley is an elegant, harmonious wine with a fine tannic structure that will evolve towards greater complexity and depth with time.
The distinctive character of the Haut-Batailley terroir comes from its situation in the south of the Pauillac appellation, on the border with Saint-Julien. The influence of this neighbouring appellation is felt in the cru, where one finds the grace, charm and delicacy that stand for a femininity often less marked in the wines of Pauillac. This harmonious complexity gives the wine character and a great deal of personality.
