Born in 1902 in the Petit Clos, the former private garden of the first Marquis de Las Cases, Clos du Marquis is today regarded as the equivalent of a second wine of Château Léoville Las Cases, vinified by the Delon family in the same cellars. The vineyard covers 45 hectares on the edge of the village of Saint-Julien: the 4.5 historic hectares of the Petit Clos, adjoining the château, and 40.5 hectares on the appellation's plateau, west of the Pauillac road, bordering Château Pichon Baron.
The Petit Clos recalls the heart of the Grand Enclos of Las Cases, with large pebbles scattered over a seam of clay. The plateau, formerly wooded, offers soil rich in organic matter over a base of clay-gravel; across the rest of the vineyard, Quaternary gravels, older and finer than those of the Enclos, rest on humic podzols and sandy-clay gravels.
Alcohol, yield and vine age are those of the 2025 vintage; they vary from year to year. Only the area above stays stable from one vintage to the next.
