The 2019 vintage in Margaux
Vintage benchmark: 96/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)
Vintage character: A hot end of summer after a rainy spring gave wines that hold ripeness and freshness together; the cabernets shine here.
Overall reading of the year’s season across Margaux. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.
Tasting
The result is a fresh, dense, generous, aromatic wine with no trace of excess. A wine of complexity that can be aged for decades being at the same time a joy to drink in its youth.
Blend of the 2019 vintage
- 45 % Merlot
- 38 % Cabernet Sauvignon
- 12 % Cabernet Franc
- 5 % Petit Verdot
Shares for this vintage, as recorded on the 2019 technical sheet. The vineyard itself is planted with 56.79 % cabernet sauvignon, 19.08 % merlot, 14.21 % petit verdot, 9.91 % cabernet franc — a vintage blend departs from the area under vine as the year dictates.
Winemaking
The strategy for this 2019 vintage was to do everything possible to preserve the elegance and delicacy typical of this Cru while bringing density and generosity. With a tight harvest window from September 23rd to October 11th, corresponding to 19 days of picking, the macerations were managed in 2019 as gently as possible, with moderate temperatures and fairly short contact times between skins and juice. A low-intervention approach on a terroir whose delicacy obliges us to respect the raw material as much as possible, in order to express its full fullness with a light touch. "At Château du Tertre, man steps aside for the terroir."
Terroir
At Château du Tertre, the mixture of clayey gravel on the upper parts of the hill and sandy gravel on the lower ground ensures a constant water supply that limits excessive water stress.
