The 2018 vintage in Margaux
Vintage benchmark: 95/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)
Vintage character: After a spring marked by mildew, the heat concentrated a small crop: rich, ripe wines with great depth of material.
Overall reading of the year’s season across Margaux. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.
Tasting
Les Hauts du Tertre 2018 follows a style driven mainly by Cabernet franc, which lends both spicy and subtly fruity notes. The palate shows fine acidity, bringing energy and length.
Blend of the 2018 vintage
- 40 % Cabernet-sauvignon
- 35 % Merlot
- 25 % Cabernet franc
Shares for this vintage, as recorded on the 2018 technical sheet. The vineyard itself is planted with 56.79 % cabernet sauvignon, 19.08 % merlot, 14.21 % petit verdot, 9.91 % cabernet franc — a vintage blend departs from the area under vine as the year dictates.
Winemaking
In traditional wooden and concrete vats of small capacities, these vats allow the plots to be isolated and vinified separately. Temperature control by thermoregulation
Ageing
50% French oak barrels (fine grain and medium toast). Age of barrels 30% new oak. Duration of ageing 12 months.
Terroir
These are the terroirs of Margaux at their highest point, and one of the highest gravel rises in the Médoc. The light and sunshine that bathe the vines protect them from late spring frosts. A stream acting as natural drainage separates the two rises. From it the vine draws the freshness essential to its development, sheltered from excess water as much as from drought.
