The 2019 vintage in Margaux
Vintage benchmark: 96/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)
Vintage character: A hot end of summer after a rainy spring gave wines that hold ripeness and freshness together; the cabernets shine here.
Overall reading of the year’s season across Margaux. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.
Tasting
The result is a fresh, dense, generous, aromatic wine with no trace of excess. A wine of complexity that can be aged for decades being at the same time a joy to drink in its youth.
Blend of the 2019 vintage
- 54 % Cabernet Sauvignon
- 27 % Merlot
- 13 % Cabernet Franc
- 6 % Petit Verdot
Shares for this vintage, as recorded on the 2019 technical sheet. The vineyard itself is planted with 56.79 % cabernet sauvignon, 19.08 % merlot, 14.21 % petit verdot, 9.91 % cabernet franc — a vintage blend departs from the area under vine as the year dictates.
Winemaking
Harvest from September 23rd to October 11th. Optical and manual sorting. Wood, concrete and stainless steel tanks. Maceration 21 days at 24°C. The harvests took place over a relatively short period, from September 23rd to October 11th, corresponding to 19 days of picking. Macerations were carried out as gently as possible, with moderate temperatures and a fairly short period of contact between the skins and the juice. This is a terroir whose delicacy obliges us to be very conservative in the way we manage maceration and extraction, adopting a minimum-intervention approach.
Ageing
French oak barrels. 30 % new oak. 12 months of ageing in barrels.
Terroir
Clayey gravel and sand. At Château du Tertre, the mixture between clayey gravel on the upper parts of the hill and sandy gravel on the lower ground ensures a moderate yet constant water supply that limits excessive water stress.
