Area under vine at the estate, from its technical sheet — it does not change from one vintage to the next. Each vintage’s blend, by contrast, departs from it: that figures on its own page. The estate does not publish the share of each grape variety: they are listed without proportions.

Footprint, parcels and their split are measured on the Compagnie Médocaine’s own parcel survey; elevation, slope and aspect on the Mapbox terrain-rgb digital terrain model, derived from IGN’s RGE ALTI over France. Compare with the blend on the technical sheet, at the top of the page: the two answer different questions.

The wine
Originally a 13th-century fortress, the present-day Château Coutet still bears the marks of its medieval construction, with its crenellated square tower typical of the military buildings of the period.
In the 14th century, a fortified house known as "La Salace", built within the property, bears witness to its architectural evolution. In the 18th century, two towers and a chapel were erected at the centre of the estate.
Terroir
The terroir of Barsac, and at Château Coutet in particular, is clay-limestone, hence its water retention. The cool soils slow the ripening of the grapes.
It is in this micro-climate, unique in the world, that Château Coutet produces its wines of gold and opal, of incomparable freshness and vivacity.
