The 2022 vintage in Pomerol
Vintage benchmark: 97/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)
Vintage character: The extreme drought was absorbed by the clays: a sun-driven concentration, but without the expected harshness.
Overall reading of the year’s season across Pomerol. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.
The vintage
Approximately 42 barrels, i.e. 4,200 cases. Sold through the Place de Bordeaux négociants: Bordeaux and Libourne. On the same estate, Château Moulinet-Lasserre, which adjoins Clos René, produces a wine of the same quality.

Winemaking
Vinification takes place in fully temperature-controlled concrete vats, for good control of fermentations and macerations.
Ageing
The wine is aged for eighteen months in oak barrels, part of which is renewed each year. The stave wood used to make the barrels comes from the Allier and is medium-toasted. Fining is always done with fresh egg whites.
Terroir
Located on the western slope of the Pomerol plateau, its soil is made up of ancient Quaternary gravel and sand resting on a subsoil of iron crasse. Clos René covers 16 hectares. The vineyard has an average age of 35 years. It is planted with 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc (Bouchet) and 10% Malbec. The vines are managed in the traditional way and the harvest is done by hand.
