Clos René 2023

The 2023 vintage in Pomerol

Vintage benchmark: 92/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)

Vintage character: Mildew cost a good share of the harvest; what was brought in is early, fresh and promising.

Overall reading of the year’s season across Pomerol. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.

The vintage

Harvest began on 12 September 2023. 2023 yield: 43 hl/ha.

Figures from the 2023 sheet

Winemaking

Vinification takes place in fully temperature-controlled concrete vats, for good control of fermentations and macerations.

Ageing

The wine is aged for eighteen months in oak barrels, 30% of which are renewed each year. The stave wood used to make the barrels comes from the Allier and is medium-toasted.

Terroir

Located on the western slope of the Pomerol plateau, its soil is made up of ancient Quaternary gravel and sand resting on a subsoil of iron crasse. Clos René covers 16 hectares. The vineyard has an average age of 45 years. It is planted with 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc (Bouchet) and 10% Malbec. The vines are managed in the traditional way, with reasoned pest control. The harvest is done by hand. Vineyard certified HVE.
