The 2019 vintage in Pomerol
Vintage benchmark: 95/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)
Vintage character: A hot end of summer on rehydrated soils gave a rare balance between freshness and substance.
Overall reading of the year’s season across Pomerol. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.

Winemaking
Vinification takes place in fully temperature-controlled concrete vats, for good control of fermentations and macerations.
Ageing
The wine is aged for eighteen months in oak barrels, 30% of which are renewed each year. The stave wood used to make the barrels comes from the Allier and is medium-toasted. Fining is always done with fresh egg whites.
Terroir
Located on the western slope of the Pomerol plateau, its soil is made up of ancient Quaternary gravel and sand resting on a subsoil of iron crasse. Clos René covers 15 hectares. The vineyard has an average age of 35 years. The vines are managed in the traditional way: soil tillage, reasoned phytosanitary treatments (biocontrol, sexual confusion). Bunch thinning if needed, harvest by hand.
