The 2018 vintage in Margaux
Vintage benchmark: 95/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)
Vintage character: After a spring marked by mildew, the heat concentrated a small crop: rich, ripe wines with great depth of material.
Overall reading of the year’s season across Margaux. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.
Tasting
Beautiful deep colour. The first nose is highly expressive; with aeration, notes of black fruit and chocolate emerge. After a clean opening, the wine develops aromas of Morello cherry and spices, with ideal concentration. The tannins are supple and the finish persistent. Chevalier de Lascombes 2018 shows good concentration and superb freshness. It will undoubtedly rank among our finest Chevalier de Lascombes vintages.
Blend of the 2018 vintage
- 55 % Merlot
- 45 % Cabernet-sauvignon
Shares for this vintage, as recorded on the 2018 technical sheet. The vineyard itself is planted with cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot — a vintage blend departs from the area under vine as the year dictates.
Winemaking
Light crushing during vatting. Cold pre-fermentation maceration lasting approximately 10 days at a temperature of 8°C. Classic vinification with light daily pump-over Long fermentation: 30 to 35 days
Terroir
The fragmented layout of the property offers an interesting diversity of soils, with three main types of terroir: clay-limestone and clay-gravel soils suited to Merlot, clay-gravel and gravel soils for Cabernet Sauvignon, and gravel for Petit Verdot. A soil survey has been carried out parcel by parcel. At once firm and unctuous, this is a wine of great character and great ageing potential, born to span decades. The generous proportion of Merlot in the blend also makes it very enjoyable in its early years.
