Château Trotte Vieille 2022

The 2022 vintage in Saint-Émilion

Vintage benchmark: 97/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)

Vintage character: The extreme drought was absorbed by the clays: a sun-driven concentration, but without the expected harshness.

Overall reading of the year’s season across Saint-Émilion. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.

Tasting

“Intensely coloured and brilliant, this TrotteVieille develops a remarkable fruity bouquet, marked by aromas of gooseberry jelly, raspberry and peony. Its aromatic precision and the complexity of its expression are fascinating, as is its palate, creamy and tasty but with a racy power. Of great distinction, its persistence and salinity admirably reflect its origin.” - Axel Marchal, Doctor of Oenology

The vintage

This vintage will stay in our memory for its exceptional climate.

In spite of rain in November and December, the first three months of the year were much drier than usual. Spring was marked in early April by five nights of very heavy frost, which fortunately had little impact on our own vineyards. Flowering in mid-May was quick and homogeneous for all grape varieties. June brought very high temperatures, heavy rains and major storms, followed by a very dry July with an extremely rapid véraison in mid-July. The summer was very dry and very warm - the warmest year since 1947. Picking started in early September and finished before the end of the month. Very concentrated grapes with small berries gave wines with superb colours, beautiful maturity and great richness, hallmarks of this exceptional vintage.

Vine cycle: flowering on 16 May, mid-véraison on 6 July. Harvest: Merlots from 2 to 16 September, Cabernets from 22 to 27 September.
