Les Hauts du Tertre 2014

The 2014 vintage in Margaux

Vintage benchmark: 90/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)

Vintage character: A gloomy summer redeemed by an Indian summer: the cabernets are radiant and the freshness is true to the Médoc.

Overall reading of the year’s season across Margaux. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.

Tasting

The nose is marked by elegant and fresh notes and this freshness is extended by a light substance which does not lack elegance and which ends up taking precedence in the finish. A wine of great finesse. Bernard Burtschy

Blend of the 2014 vintage

  • 43 % Cabernet-sauvignon
  • 33 % Merlot
  • 19 % Cabernet franc
  • 5 % Petit verdot

Shares for this vintage, as recorded on the 2014 technical sheet. The vineyard itself is planted with 56.79 % cabernet sauvignon, 19.08 % merlot, 14.21 % petit verdot, 9.91 % cabernet franc — a vintage blend departs from the area under vine as the year dictates.

Figures from the 2014 sheet

Winemaking

The Château has opted for a wooden vat, with filling of the vats by gravity. In 2008, the property was equipped with truncated conical concrete tanks. With small capacities, these vats allow the best plots to be isolated and vinified separately.

Ageing

100% French oak barrels (fine grain and medium toast). Age of barrels 30% new oak. Duration of ageing 12 - 15 months.

Terroir

These are the terroirs of Margaux at their highest point, and one of the highest gravel rises in the Médoc. The light and sunshine that bathe the vines protect them from late spring frosts. A stream acting as natural drainage separates the two rises. From it the vine draws the freshness essential to its development, sheltered from excess water as much as from drought.
