Parmi les facteurs qui constituent le terroir des grands crus figurent en premier lieu les conditions naturelles, sol et climat. C’est le climat qui autorise la culture de la vigne; c’est lui qui dans certains cas, permet aux raisins d’acquérir une maturité harmonieuse. Dans ces sites privilégiés, où la maturation est nécessairement lente et aléatoire, le sol prend une importance telle que de très fines variations, même entre deux parcelles voisines, se traduisent par de grandes différences de qualité et de typicité des vins. Sans l’attention et le travail passionné des hommes, jamais une butte de graves, aussi «privilégiée» soit-elle, ne serait devenue un grand vignoble.
