Why this vintage

The 2000 vintage in Margaux

Vintage benchmark: 96/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)

Vintage character: After a wet spring, a dry summer and a perfect September gave the decade's first great vintage: dense, complete, with very long aging potential.

Overall reading of the year’s season across Margaux. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.

Tasting

DURFORT-VIVENS 2000 exhibits a nice garnet-red colour full of intensity and deepness. Its complex bouquet reveals a very good and rich aromatic structure. This vintage is a reflection of the noble terroir. The charming smooth mouth is coupled with the silky tannins. The density and strength of this wine makes it one that has excellent ageing potential.

Winemaking

Harvest dates: Merlot from 25 to 28 September; Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon from 28 September to 7 October. The final blend and barrelling took place at the beginning of January 2001.

Ageing

Château DURFORT-VIVENS was aged in barrels for 20 months, 40 % of which were new. Natural egg whites were used for fining in the barrels.

Terroir

Situated in the communes of Margaux, Cantenac and Soussans, the Durfort-Vivens vineyard puts down its roots on deep and particularly poor gravel rises. These gravels were deposited by the successive beds of the Garonne in the Quaternary era. This great terroir gives Cabernet Sauvignon an early and optimal ripeness, allowing it to express fully the finesse and silkiness of its tannins, the guarantee of the freshness and elegance characteristic of the great Margaux wines. At Château Durfort-Vivens, the constant search for a natural balance between the vine and its terroir is reflected in traditional cultivation practices. In 2012, 80% of the vineyard was farmed biodynamically and 20% under integrated production
