Clos René 2025

The 2025 vintage in Pomerol

Vintage benchmark: 94/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)

Vintage character: A dry summer and cool nights gave balanced merlots, pure and without excess ripeness.

Overall reading of the year’s season across Pomerol. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.

The vintage

Harvest from 5 to 16 September. 2025 yield: 25 hl/ha. Approximately 45 barrels, i.e. 4,500 cases.

Blend of the 2025 vintage

  • 70 % Merlot
  • 20 % Cabernet franc
  • 10 % Malbec

Shares for this vintage, as recorded on the 2025 technical sheet. The vineyard itself is planted with 70 % merlot, 20 % cabernet franc, 10 % malbec — a vintage blend departs from the area under vine as the year dictates.

Figures from the 2025 sheet

Winemaking

Vinification takes place in fully temperature-controlled concrete vats, for good control of fermentations and macerations.

Ageing

The wine is aged for eighteen months in oak barrels, 30% of which are renewed each year. The stave wood used to make the barrels comes from the Allier and is medium-toasted.

Terroir

Located on the western slope of the Pomerol plateau, its soil is made up of ancient Quaternary gravel and sand resting on a subsoil of iron crasse. Clos René covers 16 hectares. The vineyard has an average age of 45 years. It is planted with 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc (Bouchet) and 10% Malbec. The vines are managed in the traditional way, with reasoned pest control. The harvest is done by hand. HVE level 4 certification.
