The 2017 vintage in Pomerol
Vintage benchmark: 87/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)
Vintage character: Frost struck the slope-foot vines: the plateaus saved the day, and the vintage must be judged plot by plot.
Overall reading of the year’s season across Pomerol. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.
Tasting
On the nose, delicate aromas of black fruits and sweets. After a moment of decanting, lively notes of mint and liquorice dominate on the palate.
Blend of the 2017 vintage
- 75 % Merlot
- 20 % Cabernet franc
- 5 % Malbec
Shares for this vintage, as recorded on the 2017 technical sheet. The vineyard itself is planted with 70 % merlot, 20 % cabernet franc, 10 % malbec — a vintage blend departs from the area under vine as the year dictates.
Winemaking
Vinification takes place in fully thermoregulated cement vats for good control of fermentations and macerations.
Ageing
The wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels, part of which is renewed each year.
Terroir
Located on the western slope of the Pomerol plateau, its soil is made up of ancient Quaternary gravel and sand resting on a subsoil of iron crasse. Clos René covers 15 hectares, with vines averaging 35 years of age. The vineyard is planted with 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Malbec. The vines are managed in the traditional way and the harvest is done by hand.
