The 2019 vintage in Saint-Julien
Vintage benchmark: 96/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)
Vintage character: A hot end of summer after a rainy spring gave wines that hold ripeness and freshness together; the cabernets shine here.
Overall reading of the year’s season across Saint-Julien. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.
Tasting
Clos du Marquis is powerful and elegant, with a more classically Saint-Julien expression. The ripe fruit and the finesse of the grain are confirmed on the palate with volume and precision. A fine and noble Great Wine.

Terroir
The Petit Clos recalls the heart of the Grand Enclos of Las Cases, with large pebbles scattered over a seam of clay. The plateau, formerly wooded, offers soil rich in organic matter over a base of clay-gravel; across the rest of the vineyard, Quaternary gravels, older and finer than those of the Enclos, rest on humic podzols and sandy-clay gravels.
