Why this vintage

The 2013 vintage in Moulis

Vintage benchmark: 78/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)

Vintage character: Coulure, mildew, then rain during the harvest: a light vintage, ready to drink.

Overall reading of the year’s season across Moulis. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.

Tasting

The red is deep. The wine is clean and precise. Before swirling: a light floral note over a minty background. After swirling: black cherry and curry. The attack is forthright and the palate full-bodied. The Cabernet Sauvignon marks the volume with its weave, in delicate tannic harmony. The finish is persistent and floral.

Blend of the 2013 vintage

  • 60 % Cabernet-sauvignon
  • 33 % Merlot
  • 7 % Petit verdot

Shares for this vintage, as recorded on the 2013 technical sheet. The vineyard itself is planted with cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot, muscadelle, sauvignon blanc, sémillon — a vintage blend departs from the area under vine as the year dictates.

Winemaking

The grapes pass over a vibrating sorting table before being crushed, destemmed and then pumped into tanks. These are partly epoxy-coated concrete and partly stainless steel. Alcoholic fermentation lasts around 10 days, during which pump-overs are carried out. A 2-week maceration is followed by drawing off, during which the free-run wine and the press wine are separated, the latter obtained by pressing the cap of skins. Malolactic fermentation begins in tank for both the free-run wine and the press wine. Ageing, 40% in new barrels, lasts 18 months for the grand vin and 12 for the second wines. It takes place in Château Chasse-Spleen's semi-underground cellar.

Terroir

The vineyard, covering 80 hectares, lies at the highest point of the Grand-Poujeaux gravel ridges. The soil is 80% Garonne gravel over a subsoil of asteriated limestone (calcaire à astéries), the remaining 20% being clay-limestone. The plantings consist of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vineyard is 30 years. Cultivation follows traditional methods (earthing-up and unearthing of the vines) and the harvest is done by hand. The Chasse-Spleen terroir yields structured wines with character and good ageing potential. Vineyard management at Chasse-Spleen is conventional.
