Château Soutard 2011

The 2011 vintage in Saint-Émilion

Vintage benchmark: 86/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)

Vintage character: A warm spring followed by a wet summer gave classic wines, best drunk relatively young.

Overall reading of the year’s season across Saint-Émilion. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.

Blend of the 2011 vintage

  • 70 % Merlot
  • 30 % Cabernet franc

Shares for this vintage, as recorded on the 2011 technical sheet. The vineyard itself is planted with 63 % merlot, 23 % cabernet franc, 11 % cabernet sauvignon, 3 % malbec — a vintage blend departs from the area under vine as the year dictates.

Terroir

Located on this unique limestone plateau where all the great growths of Saint-Émilion reveal themselves, Soutard extends over 27 hectares in a single block, 22 hectares of which are under vine. The château, flanked by two farm buildings, is unusual for the region because of its size. Built in 1762, it stands at the centre of the vineyard, facing north-south, and is the true heart of the estate, overlooking the neighbouring valley.
