Château Rouget 2020

The 2020 vintage in Pomerol

Vintage benchmark: 96/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)

Vintage character: An early, dry year gave splendid wines, which many rank above 2018.

Overall reading of the year’s season across Pomerol. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.

The vintage

Despite a winter with cumulated rainfall largely above average value (650 mm in 2020 vs. 430 mm in average), the budburst started quite early in the end of March. During the first half of April, the summer-like temperatures, between 22 and 26 degrees Celsius, activated the growth of the vine. In mid-May, most of the plots were at the flowering stage.

The harvests started very early, on September 15th, 2020 and ended a fortnight later.

The wines are velvety and fruity, and have a beautiful concentration, with tension and a lot of freshness.

Blend of the 2020 vintage

  • 85 % Merlot
  • 15 % Cabernet franc

Shares for this vintage, as recorded on the 2020 technical sheet. The vineyard itself is planted with 85 % merlot, 15 % cabernet franc — a vintage blend departs from the area under vine as the year dictates.
