Château Pibran 2023

The 2023 vintage in Pauillac

Vintage character: July mildew followed by a hot September demanded rigorous selection: fleshy, aromatic wines, more approachable than 2022.

Overall reading of the year’s season across Pauillac. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.

Blend of the 2023 vintage

  • 54 % Cabernet-sauvignon
  • 46 % Merlot

Shares for this vintage, as recorded on the 2023 technical sheet. The vineyard itself is planted with cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc — a vintage blend departs from the area under vine as the year dictates.

Winemaking

Maceration temperatures were between 25 and 27 °C. Extractions were preferably placed at the heart of fermentation and daily tastings refined the length of post-fermentation maceration. The Merlots were run off from 30 September to 12 October and the Cabernets from 10 to 24 October. Malolactic fermentations took place quickly on the skins, allowing regular barrelling of separate lots. Barrelling was completed on 4 November. 2023 stands out for its pure, fresh and precise fruit. The wine is characterised by a balance between tension and power. We find the fruit and finesse of the 2019 vintage as well as the power and length of the 2020.
