The 2018 vintage in Pomerol
Vintage benchmark: 96/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)
Vintage character: After the mildew, the heat concentrated a small harvest: rich, ripe and very dense wines.
Overall reading of the year’s season across Pomerol. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.
Tasting
The colour is dark and brilliant. On the nose, the wine develops aromas of strawberry purée and blackberries. With aeration, blackcurrant appears. The wine is very complex and promises great tactile softness. On the palate, it does not disappoint. It has plenty of amplitude and depth. The grain is caressing, as silky as can be. The finish stretches out over a complex aromatic palette and a lovely freshness.
The vintage
2018 was a hot and rainy year marked by a strong heterogeneity of rains in the spring then a drought in August. Between March and August, average temperatures have always been equal to or above the 2006-2018 average, 7 out of 12 months are above average. At the 31st of august, the rainfall benefit was +110 mm (+ 15%). After a winter marked by a very high rainfall (twice the average rainfall in De cember), the spring was very wet with sometimes significant differences depen ding on the sector (between 60 and 120 mm in June). The third characteristic of this vintage is the strong August drought with signs of defoliation on some young vines. The rains of early September have been welcome but there is a heterogeneity between the stations in the area, from 10 to 50 mm. Overall, the 2018 water balance has been complicated to manage in the vineyard.
Harvest: 17th September to 3rd October.
