The 2022 vintage in Saint-Émilion
Vintage benchmark: 97/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)
Vintage character: The extreme drought was absorbed by the clays: a sun-driven concentration, but without the expected harshness.
Overall reading of the year’s season across Saint-Émilion. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.
The vintage
The 2022 vintage was dry, with rainfall 35% below the thirty-year average. The annual sum of temperatures is equal to the average but hides significant contrasts over the year.
The vintage began with a frost episode between 1 and 5 April, which may have caused local damage depending on the stage of budbreak. Flowering was fairly early, with the first flowers around 15 May. The rain in June fortunately supported vegetative growth, the rest of the summer being hot and dry with a few heatwave episodes that may have led to scorching. Thanks to deep rooting and the management of the grass cover, the vines withstood the drought rather well.
