The 2019 vintage in Saint-Émilion
Vintage benchmark: 95/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)
Vintage character: A hot end of summer on rehydrated soils gave a rare balance between freshness and substance.
Overall reading of the year’s season across Saint-Émilion. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.
The vintage
The harvest began under bright sunshine on 23 September with the youngest vines, with ripe, perfectly healthy grapes. Excellent conditions followed, allowing the estate to pick according to its priorities until 7 October.
In the cellar, the work on the tanks is subtle, with relatively long passive macerations, supervised by numerous tastings.
The 2019 vintage now shows a silky texture supported by lovely freshness and a long, harmonious finish. Without a doubt, the 2019 is among the finest successes of recent years.
