Château Fonroque 2011

The 2011 vintage in Saint-Émilion

Vintage benchmark: 86/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)

Vintage character: A warm spring followed by a wet summer gave classic wines, best drunk relatively young.

Overall reading of the year’s season across Saint-Émilion. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.

Tasting

Notes of fresh fruit, redcurrant, raspberry and violet flowers. The attack is supple, then the wine develops with fine energy on crystalline notes. The wine is both very refined and crisp: it recalls fresh fruit, with a pretty silky texture and great elegance. Long, lively finish for the vintage, with saline notes.

Blend of the 2011 vintage

  • 85 % Merlot
  • 15 % Cabernet franc

Shares for this vintage, as recorded on the 2011 technical sheet. The vineyard itself is planted with 87 % merlot, 13 % cabernet franc — a vintage blend departs from the area under vine as the year dictates.
