The 2018 vintage in Pomerol
Vintage benchmark: 96/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)
Vintage character: After the mildew, the heat concentrated a small harvest: rich, ripe and very dense wines.
Overall reading of the year’s season across Pomerol. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.
Tasting
The colour is a deep garnet red. The nose is fine, marked by the elegance of light oak and ripe fruit notes, with blackcurrant dominant. On the palate the wine is complex, with aromas of black fruit, blackberry and spices. It has silky tannins, flesh and a fine balance. The finish is long, harmonious and very refined.

Shares for this vintage, as recorded on the 2018 technical sheet. The vineyard itself is planted with merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc — a vintage blend departs from the area under vine as the year dictates.
Winemaking
After destemming and crushing, alcoholic fermentations take place in temperature-controlled concrete tanks.
Ageing
18% new barrels. 82% 1- to 3-year-old barrels.
Terroir
Located 35 km east of Bordeaux, the Château de Sales vineyard lies in the north-west of the Pomerol appellation. With 47.50 hectares under vine out of the 90 that make up the estate, Château de Sales is the largest property in the Pomerol appellation. The soils are formed of small gravels and sands with some clayey parts, and iron oxide, known as "crasse de fer" (iron pan), is present throughout.
