The 2017 vintage in Saint-Julien
Vintage benchmark: 85/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)
Vintage character: April frost cut the crop in half: the plots that were spared give fine, classic wines, and the vintage must be judged estate by estate.
Overall reading of the year’s season across Saint-Julien. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.
Tasting
Château Beychevelle 2017 shows a very deep purple colour. A bouquet of well-ripened red fruit dominates the nose. The purity of the fruit, the refinement of the tannins and an elegant oaky touch intertwine to offer a silky palate. Château Beychevelle 2017 is the harmonious marriage of the elegance and precision of our Cabernets and the generosity and roundness of our Merlots. This particularly generous harvest allowed us to raise the level of selection at blending time, offering a wine of very great precision.

Winemaking
The 2017 harvest was spread over three weeks, following the ripeness of each terroir, and ranks among the earliest years, with picking concentrated in the second half of September. As in 2016, the new vat room allowed the full quality of the harvest to be showcased. Each parcel was thus able to express its own identity in perfectly suited vats. By the end of vinification, no fewer than eighty vats were ready to be blended to create Château Beychevelle 2017.
Ageing
60% new barrels.
Terroir
Château Beychevelle, the Versailles of the Médoc, could only produce a wine of excellence. An exceptional 90-hectare vineyard of deep Garonne gravel, a winegrowing tradition going back to the Middle Ages and painstaking work in selection and ageing bring the wine to its full expression. The blend is 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
