Vintage benchmark: 87/100 (appellation benchmark, not a score for this wine)
Vintage character: A scorching spring followed by a wet August turned the seasons upside down: classic wines, shorter but true to type.
Overall reading of the year’s season across Saint-Julien. An estate can depart from it sharply, in frost or hail years, where two neighbours did not make the same vintage. What this particular wine actually gave is on its technical sheet and in the scores above.
This Château Beychevelle 2011, despite the difficulty of the vintage, continues to gain in softness, with a very nice substance and a lot of smoothness on the palate. All charm, with a crunchy grain. It is proof that the orientation given to the vineyard is being translated into the wines.
Shares for this vintage, as recorded on the 2011 technical sheet. The vineyard itself is planted with 62 % cabernet sauvignon, 31 % merlot, 5 % cabernet franc, 2 % petit verdot — a vintage blend departs from the area under vine as the year dictates.
The vats are filled and homogenized by pump-over and adjustments by saignée. Alcoholic fermentation in tanks is carried out with selected yeasts and lasts 21 to 28 days.
18 months in oak barrels, renewed every year by half
Château Beychevelle, the Versailles of the Médoc, could only produce a wine of excellence. An exceptional 90-hectare vineyard of deep Garonne gravel, a winegrowing tradition going back to the Middle Ages and painstaking work in selection and ageing bring the wine to its full expression. The blend is 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
